House of the Dragon Season 2 will bring back many key cast members from the first season - including one particularly unexpected return - along with some newcomers. However, one major absentee will come through Paddy Considine's King Viserys I Targaryen after his death last season. House Velaryon is one of the oldest (and wealthiest) houses in Westeros, with a Valyrian bloodline as ancient as House Targaryen — as its current lord, Corlys “the Sea Snake,” loves to remind Viserys. The Velaryons are a Valyrian house, originating from Essos’ Valyrian Peninsula. Corlys is married to Viserys’ cousin, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, dubbed the Queen Who Never Was after she was passed over as Jaehaerys’ heir. Though Laenor is not a member of House Targaryen, he is the rider of the Targaryen-bred dragon Seasmoke. Season 1 of House of the Dragon picked up eight Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series (winning for its costumes) as it set up the story of House Targaryen almost 200 years before the events of GoT.

Of the three dragons that participated in Aegon’s War of Conquest, the only one still alive at the time of House of the Dragon is Vhagar. The largest of the dragons, big enough to rival even Balerion the Dread, Vhagar grew too large for the dragon pits at King’s Landing and left to make a nest for herself along the Narrow Sea. Laena Velareon mentions that the spice-traders in Driftmark hear her song at times, and that she sounds lonely in her size-imposed isolation. Vhagar was ridden by Visenya Targaryen during the Conquest, most notably participating in the Field of Fire and conquering the Vale, and Rhaenyra picks an egg that reminds her of Vhagar for her ill-fated baby brother Baelon’s crib.

The twins were joined at the royal hunt by their widowed mother Ceira and Brett, a relative whose exact connection to the family is unknown. Almost 100 years old at the outbreak of the Dance of the Dragons, Vermithor is a bronze dragon with tan wings. The third-largest dragon in the realms, just shy of Balerion and Vhagar, Vermithor was originally the mount of King Jaehaerys Targaryen.

House Targaryen are pureblood Valyrians, and Viserys brokers a political alliance with one of the only other Valyrian houses, Velaryon, when he commands Rhaenrya to marry her second cousin Laenor Velaryon. Despite this — and the fact they’re related — Daemon still pursues a marriage with his niece Rhaenyra. Their ancestral seat is Dragonstone, though they rule out of King’s Landing. Millie Alcock and the rest of the first-generation Targaryens and Hightowers will, as far as HBO has indicated, not be returning this season in flashbacks.
