Level Mix is meant for warm season lawns; it does not work on tall fescue. Best time to level your warm season lawn is when it's actively growing in the spring and summer. You can level uneven ground by relying on the tips outlined here. Fill the depression in your lawn with a sandy soil mix.
The information I provide through my blog comes from my experience and the research I do by asking experts in the field.

Topsoil alone isn’t ideal; the sand helps promote proper drainage. If you want to spread the lawn leveling mix evenly you could use a rake to do the job. But if you want to save time and do it faster and better than a normal rake, you could invest in a lawn leveler.
Dirt doesn’t spread and smooth as well so a higher sand ratio is better for skimming shallow variations. These are the finest types of sands, they don’t contain large chunks of rocks and pebbles. But just using normal all-purpose sand won’t do. The all-purpose sand contains a lot of pebbles and rocks, this will hinder the growth of the grass. You will have to use either masonry sand or play sand. BigYellowBags will be delivered on or before December 24th.
Sod by Type
I've already got the soil and sand, and I'm just smoothing out some bumpy areas. Just want to know if I should mix batches by weight, say 40 lbs of each, or by volume, a 5 gallon bucket of each. Because a 5 gallon bucket of sand weighs a good amount more than a 5 gallon bucket of topsoil. An even lawn is also very easy to maintain. Mowing an uneven lawn can be difficult, the mower will jump around in bumpy areas, providing you with uneven cuts. Mowing an uneven lawn also requires more time than an even one.
OK, so taking your ratio, would a theoretical batch of material be made by combining 9 lbs. Or 9 shovels of sand with 1 shovel of topsoil? Each of those would give very different results.

Click here to read an article written by me on leveling lawn without killing grass. It covers all the methods you could use to level the lawn depending on the condition of the lawn. Clay particles are very small compared to sand particles. They might look the same to the naked eye but on a microscopic level, there’s a lot of difference.

If you got 2-3"+ ruts, I would spot level a soil mix first. In some cases, you may even find that companies combine these two topdressings. They will mix their sturdy sand type topdressing with a little compost topdressing. This allows the low spots to be filled, but also have nutrients to help the grass in that area continue to grow well. A mixture with this composition will level the lawn without damaging the grass. But there are a few more things you should keep in mind while leveling the lawn, which can save you a lot of time and resources.
Use Dry Materials
As air pockets become filled with water, drainage issues could develop and lead to areas of depression in your front or backyard terrain. Drainage issues, of course, can cause the death of grass roots. Excessive water is not good for most other plants in your landscape either.
So when we mix the clay and sand together, the tiny clay particles will sift in between the sandy particles. Which will form a hard cement-like consistency, this mixture of sand and clay is too tight for good water flow. Clay is already not very good for the grass, it lessens the water flow.
Its got so much sticks wood barks mulch and things and not fine at all. Anyone know what brand has the most fine soil at home depot? Or is it ok to buy premium potting soils for lawn leveling? Yes, you can usually level a yard on your own if you have the proper equipment and the sunken areas are not too extensive. Leveling your own lawn is simple, provided you take the steps outlined here.
You may find that as the dirt settles, you’ll need to add more of your sand soil mix. That’s typical and not something to worry about. After a few soil mix additions, you should find that you have a more level yard. If the existing grass is struggling, you can new sod or try re-seeding.
By learning how to level your lawn when you discover sunken areas, you can better maintain a great yard and healthier grass. Using compost with the lawn leveling mixture is a great way of enriching the soil while leveling it. If you are thinking of leveling the lawn with compost, that won’t work. If you are making your own leveling mixture and not getting a ready-made one. You might have to add the components into the mixture yourself.

I appreciate all the replies, but I'm really just wondering as a general rule, not just for my situation. I assume so, but I never see it specified as such anywhere. Seasonal factors like freezing and thawing of the soil can also cause an uneven yard.
